One factor that sets the Queensland Mining Awards apart from other industry awards programs is the public and active participation of the high calibre judging panel. As the Awards celebrate a decade of excellence, the judging panel once again comprises executives from all levels of the C-Suite.
The QMA judges volunteer their time to review every single award in the program against a rigorous set of criteria, using their considerable industry expertise to determine true innovation and identify the game-changing developments for the industry.
QMA’s judging panel for 2024 includes:
- Darren Oliver, Group Manager Procurement, Glencore
- Dr Sharna Glover, Chief Executive Officer, Imvelo
- Jason Economidis, Chief Operating Officer, South32
- Andrea Rutley, Head of Technical & Analytics, Anglo American
- Luiz Sapucaia, General Manager Supply, Stanmore Resources
Jodie Currie, Bowen Basin Mining Club Director, says the peer judging process has brought tremendous rewards to entrants in the past.
“The opportunity to have the judging panel review your submission is a fantastic benefit of entry into the Awards. We ensure that every entrant receives feedback, but it’s more than just feedback – finalists in the Awards can be assured that the judges have read and understood exactly why their innovation is significant to industry. How often do you get the opportunity to present directly to executives on the benefits of your initiative or technology like that?” said Ms Currie.
With expertise spanning procurement, technology and innovation, operations and geoscience, each judge brings several decades of industry experience to the judging table. They’re also aware of the importance of recognising and rewarding Queensland’s innovators to further build the state’s reputation internationally at the forefront of the mining industry, across the Awards’ eight categories in innovation, productivity, new products, collaboration, environment, safety, and community engagement.
Darren Oliver, Group Procurement Manager Glencore, returns to the QMA judging panel for a third consecutive time in 2024. Darren’s extensive experience in supply chain and procurement across Glencore’s business in Queensland and NSW provides keen insights to what is truly innovative in the current market.
“I’ve always thoroughly enjoyed the experience of judging at QMA, right from the review of entries through to the ultimate reward of seeing the smiles on faces as businesses have their moment in the spotlight at the Gala Presentation. We really do scrutinise every entry on its merits, and the debate around the judging table is always lively and engaged.” said Mr Oliver.
